Solar Panel Maintenance: Simple Habits That Protect Your Investment

Solar Panel Maintenance: Simple Habits That Protect Your Investment

One of the appeals of rooftop solar is how little maintenance it needs. Panels have no moving parts, and most systems run quietly for decades. Even so, a few simple habits can help your system produce as much power as it can for as long as possible.

Check Production Regularly

Most systems come with a monitoring app or portal that shows how much electricity your panels generate. Take a look every week or two. Sudden drops in production that are not explained by weather, such as an inverter error or an unusually low day, are worth investigating. Compare your output with the same month in previous years rather than a single day.

Keep Panels Reasonably Clean

In many areas, rain keeps panels clean enough. In dry, dusty regions, such as much of Southern California, dust, pollen, bird droppings and ash can reduce output. If you decide to clean, do it early in the morning or evening when panels are cool, use water and a soft brush or sponge, and avoid harsh chemicals or pressure washers. Never climb onto a roof unless you are trained and equipped to do so. A professional cleaning service may be a safer choice.

Trim Back Vegetation

Tree branches that grow over panels create shade, which can reduce production significantly even when only part of the array is shaded. Have trees trimmed periodically so that panels receive direct sun through the day.

Inspect for Visible Issues

  • Cracked or discolored panels.
  • Loose wiring or damaged conduit.
  • Nests or debris under the array.
  • Signs of roof leaks near mounting points.

Binoculars let you check from the ground. If you see damage, contact your installer.

Know Your Inverter

The inverter converts direct current from your panels into usable alternating current. Check the indicator light on the unit. A green light usually means normal operation, while red or flashing lights may signal a problem. String inverters often last about ten to fifteen years, while microinverters tend to have longer warranties.

Plan for Roof Work

If your roof will need repair or replacement, panels must be removed and reinstalled by a qualified professional. Ideally, align solar installation with the roof's remaining life.

Keep Your Documents

Store warranties, permit records, and your installer's contact information in one place. If you sell your home, these documents help buyers understand the system.
